Questions

Seeing a gynaecologist can cause a lot of anxiety for some people. We will do everything we can to put you at ease throughout the whole process.

Do I need a referral from a GP?

You do not need to have a GP referral to see us. A GP referral can be helpful as this allows the GP to send through any relevant medical history, medications, and often means that the appropriate blood tests, scans or other investigations are arranged before you see the specialist.

Do I need to have private health insurance?

We will see anyone, but there will be a fee if you do not have private health insurance. Our team can advise you of this fee before you come to the appointment. Please check with your insurance provider as to whether they will cover the consultation.

If we recommend surgery or a procedure and you don't have private health insurance, we will offer to refer you to Te Whatu Ora (Health New Zealand) either at Wellington or Hutt Valley Hospital (depending on where you live). It is important to note that if this happens you will need to be referred to see a specialist in the public hospital for a consultation (i.e. we are not able to directly put you on the waitlist in the public hospital). The public system has specific wait time targets set by the Ministry of Health; this is different for different situations, such as where there is a high suspicion of cancer.

What will happen during and after the appointment?

The first appointment will always involve a conversation to discuss your concerns. An examination may be recommended, which will may involve a genital or internal examination or ultrasound. Sometimes a short procedure may be also be offered at the first visit. Examinations and procedures are always optional, and you can always choose not to go ahead, or to wait until another appointment.

After the appointment we may want to arrange investigations including blood tests or ultrasound scans, or occasionally other types of imaging such as CT or MRI scans. You might be offered another clinic appointment or offered surgery or a procedure.  If you are offered surgery or a procedure, the details of the procedure will be discussed with you, including the risks and benefits, and what to expect before, during and after the procedure. You may not find out the date or location of the procedure on the day it is booked, but we will get back to you with this information as soon as we can.

Do you offer obstetric (pregnancy) care?

No. All gynaecologists trained in Aotearoa and Australia are trained as both obstetricians and gynaecologists, but Cycles Gynaecology only provides gynaecology care. We are happy to provide consultations for pregnant patients, but we do not offer a full obstetric service. We highly recommend Wellington Obstetrics, who are currently the only provider of private obstetric services in the greater Wellington region.
